The world has been in constant awe of the
speeches given by Michelle Obama and
Barack Obama at the Democratic National
Convention. Michelle Obama's speech was
full of emotion, that left listeners glued.
People all over the world have continued to
watch both speeches over and over, and
why? The Michelle and Barack Obama give
wonderful speeches.
Are there Nigerians like that? Well, we have
had some speeches by Nigerians that are
arguably better than Obama's.
Unbelievable right? Well look at the list
below:
1. First Prime Minister Alhaji Sir Abubakar
Tafawa Balewa on October 1 1960
This speech given on the 1st of October,
1960 by Nigeria's first Prime Minister, Sir
Abubakar Tafawa Balewa will go down in
Nigerian history as one of the best
speeches ever.
On that fateful Saturday morning the place
now called the Tafawa Balewa Square in
Lagos was filled to the brim as the Prime
Minister stepped up to the podium and
gave one of the greatest speeches ever.
2. Nigeria's first military coup – January,
1966
After Nigeria's first military coup on
January 15, 1966. Nigerian President
Nnamdi Azikiwe responded with another
speech that goes down in history as truly
great.
The speech which condemned the violence,
said in part:
"Violence has never been an instrument
used by us, as founding fathers of the
Nigerian Republic, to solve political
problems."
On the 30th of May, 1967, Chukwuemeka
Odumegwu Ojukwu declared Biafra a
sovereign state. The declaration which led
to the Biafran civil war will not be forgotten
in Nigeria's history.
It began with following words:
"Fellow countrymen and women, you, the
people of Eastern Nigeria:
Conscious of the supreme authority of
Almighty God over all mankind, of your
duty to yourselves and prosperity;
Aware that you can no longer be protected
in your lives and in your property by any
Government based outside eastern
Nigeria."
4. The Dawn of National Reconciliation
On the 15th of January, 1970, Yakubu
Gowon the Nigerian Head of State spoke at
the end of the bloody civil war, urging
national reconciliation.
His famous words to a nation that just
went through a most difficult period, were:
"The so-called "Rising Sun of Biafra" is set
for ever. It will be a great disservice for
anyone to continue to use the word Biafra
to refer to any part of the East Central
State of Nigeria.
The tragic chapter of violence is just
ended. We are the dawn of national
reconciliation. Once again, we have an
opportunity to build a new nation."

We all agree that Buhari's 2015 speech
was beautiful and moving, yet in 1984,
when he gave his maiden speech after
being made Nigeria's Head of State, he
moved the country with his oratory skills
too.
His final words were:
"Fellow Nigerians, finally, we have dutifully
intervened to save this nation from
imminent collapse. We therefore expect all
Nigerians, including those who participated
directly or indirectly in bringing the nation
to this present predicament, to cooperate
with us. This generation of Nigerians, and
indeed future generations, have no country
other than Nigeria. We shall remain here
and salvage it together.
May God bless us all. Good morning."
Some of these speeches will bring tears to your eyes, just look for
them and read.
